Septic Cleaning Service
How Septic Systems Work and Why Regular Maintenance Is Important
As your system is used, solids settle to the bottom of the tank, forming a sludge layer. Other materials like grease float to the surface of the septic tank and form a "scum" layer on the top. Only part of the waste is digested in the tank and no additive can change this.
Tanks are designed to handle up to 3-5 years of accumulation of sludge. When the sludge level increases beyond this point, incoming sewage into the system has less space, less time, to settle properly before seeping out of the system. As the sludge layer increases, more solid waste escapes into the soil absorption system. If this becomes clogged, it cannot absorb liquid properly at the rate it enters the system and will then cause a back-up and your septic field to become very wet.
Regular Crosier's septic cleaning service helps to prevent solids from escaping into the drain field and clogging soil pores. While pumping frequency is a function of use, Crosier's as well as the EPA recommend that systems be pumped at least once every 3-5 years for homes not having a garbage disposal. If the home's system has a garbage disposal, it should be pumped more often.
System Warning Signs:
- Waste drains slowly at times of heavy use
- Appliances releasing a large volume cause overflow above septic lid or leach field
- Strong odor
- No maintenance in over 3-5 years
